Annnnd Maduro pleads not guilty and claims he was kidnapped. “A defiant Nicolás Maduro declared himself “the president of my country” as he protested his capture and pleaded not guilty Monday to federal drug trafficking charges that the Trump administration used to justify removing him from power in Venezuela. “I was captured,” Maduro said in Spanish as translated by a courtroom interpreter before being cut off by the judge. Asked later for his plea to the charges, he stated: “I am innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man, the constitutional president of my country.” TBD. But the real question is not are you a good man (most vote no), but that it is not the position of the US to be the arbiter of law and justice for the globe, or even just the Western hemisphere.

Annnnnd TOM said he’s coming for five more countries. Here’s who’s on notice that the greatest lunatic in the world is coming for them: Columbia, Iran, India, Cuba, and yes, still Greenland. No great shock that no one took this too well. The Danes started doubling down immediately after Maduro’s kidnaping. “The inviolability of borders is not up for negotiation,” said Christina Markus Lassen, Danish ambassador to the U.N.” (re: Greenland, obliquely, but who else could she mean?). “Trump said Sunday: “We are in the business of having countries around us that are viable and successful and where the oil is allowed to freely come out.” “American dominance in the Western Hemisphere will never be questioned again,” Trump said.” I guess this will be a wait and see situation, TOM. Annnnd the UN is not happy. The Security Council had an emergency meeting today. Friends and foes alike took “us”/US to task for Maduro. “Both allies and adversaries of the United States on Monday used an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to voice opposition to the audacious U.S. military operation in Venezuela that captured leader Nicolás Maduro. Before the U.N.'s most powerful body, countries critiqued — if sometimes obliquely — President Donald Trump’s intervention in the South American country and his recent comments signaling the possibility of expanding military action to countries like Colombia and Mexico over drug trafficking accusations. The Republican president also has reupped his threat to take over the Danish territory of Greenland for the sake of U.S. security interests.”

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that he is “deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected with regard to the 3 January military action.” He said the “grave” action by the U.S. could set a precedent for how future relations between nations unfold.” Indeed. Especially considering the threats cited above. Will the UN sanction TOM ahead of presumed illegal and implied action that TOM appears to be promising?

And there are actually other horrible things, due to TOM, going on right on our shores. What a new year’s gift this must seem to TOM. “Leaders of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private agency that has steered federal funding to PBS, NPR and hundreds of public television and radio stations across the country, voted Monday to dissolve the organization that was created in 1967. CPB had been winding down since Congress acted last summer to defund its operations at the encouragement of President Donald Trump. Its board of directors chose Monday to shutter CPB completely instead of keeping it in existence as a shell.” Buh bye Bert and Ernie, Cookie, ZOOM, The Electric Company and so many other great, educational, youth-oriented shows. There will never be a replacement.
