351 days for the Rs to finally stand up to TOM

Jan 8, 2026 (351/1461)

It took 351 days, but Congress finally grew a spine. It took kidnapping a sitting head of state to light a tiny fire under their butts. But the first attempt at putting a blanket over the flamethrower that is TOM 2.0 has happened. “The Senate advanced a resolution Thursday that would limit President Donald Trump’s ability to conduct further attacks against Venezuela, sounding a note of disapproval for his expanding ambitions in the Western Hemisphere.

Democrats and five Republicans voted to advance the war powers resolution on a 52-47 vote and ensure a vote next week on final passage. It has virtually no chance of becoming law because Trump would have to sign it if it were to pass the Republican-controlled House. Still, it was a significant gesture that showed unease among some Republicans after the U.S. military seized Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a surprise nighttime raid over the weekend.” It may seem performative, but it at the least shows a hand to TOM that he didn’t think he would see. His base turning against him. Of course the five Rs who went to the dark side will be rebuked, dis-owned, tarred, feathered and made the target for crazy Trumpers across the country.

TOM still can’t let go of Jan 6 or the 2020 election. A federal law has been ignored (shocker I know). The plaque to commemorate those who defended the Capitol on Jan 6, 2021 was by law to be hung three years ago. Another of tried and true TOM crew, Tom Tillis, has stood up to lead the effort. “The Senate has agreed to display a plaque honoring the police who defended the Capitol during the attack on Jan. 6, 2021, rebuffing House Speaker Mike Johnson who has said the commemorative memorial does not comply with the law.

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina led the effort, announcing on this week’s fifth anniversary of the Capitol siege that he would ask colleagues to have it installed. On Thursday, Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon joined the effort. No other senators objected. Police had sued to place the plaque as required, but Trump’s Justice Department is trying to dismiss the lawsuit.” I am running out of ways to write “what a piece of crap” when TOM & Co make moves like this. But he is. A piece of crap.

And on our own war front in Minnesota, things have remained tense and uncertain. The killing of a mother of three in her car who was trying to exit a dangerous situation lit a tinderbox that had barely cooled since George Floyd. “Minnesota’s investigations agency said Thursday that the U.S. attorney’s office has prevented it from taking part in the investigation into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer’s fatal shooting of Minneapolis woman Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three. It had been decided that the BCA would investigate Good’s shooting death along with the FBI, but the U.S. attorney’s office changed that, according to Evans. Asked about the development, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Thursday that Minnesota authorities “don’t have any jurisdiction in this investigation.” Well, isn’t that an ironic statement? You, Ms. No-heart-em have no jurisdiction to rampage through the streets of our cities with no cause and blatant disregard for the safety and security of the citizenship. Because that is clearly the underlying sentiment that preceded the killing of an innocent American citizen.

And with a final thumb to the nose, the House has passed a resolution to extend the ACA subsidies. I mean, really? How could they not see the writing on the wall that all of those Rs from deeeeep red states were going to be out out out when their constituents couldn’t pay the 150% increases in health care premiums that were coming down the pike? “The House on Thursday approved the renewal of the expired Obamacare subsidies, delivering a blow to Republican leadership and underlining conference divides.

Seventeen Republicans joined 213 Democrats in support of the three-year extension after the Affordable Care Act tax credits lapsed at the end of last year. The bill, which passed 230-196, will now head to the Senate, where it has a slim chance of moving to the floor.” It is gratifying, even if it’s a lot too late, to see the Rs come to their ever loving senses about the destruction, dissection, and devastation being wreaked upon all but the very wealthy. In every single state. In every single district.
