The UN is comin’ for the US, and TOM. The UN Security Council is meeting today to take the US to task for their attacks and persecution of Venezuela. Prompted by a formal letter from the Venezuelan state to the UN asking for intercession, the UNSC came together to voice opinion from around the world as to the reckless and illegal actions going on in the Caribbean. “This afternoon (23 December), the Security Council will hold an open briefing under the “Threats to international peace and security” agenda item. Venezuela requested an urgent Council meeting in a 17 December letter, citing escalating tensions resulting from “US aggression” against the country (S/2025/825). China and Russia supported the meeting request. Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO) Mohamed Khaled Khiari is expected to brief. Venezuela and several regional countries are expected to participate in the meeting under rule 37 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure. In its 17 December letter requesting today’s meeting, Venezuela rejected any US claims to Venezuelan oil reserves and argued that the threats levelled by Washington violate Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. It further called on the Security Council to address the US’ ongoing aggression against Venezuela.” Well this is an interesting turn of events. My call is that TOM is going to lose his mind, take to social media with his fingers flying like the monkeys in the Wizard of Oz and lambast the entire UN. He’s going to call for kicking the UN our of NYC and refuse re-entry for those members of the Security Council who speak out against him and the US today.”
Straight down the line, you could nearly see each representative rubbing their hands together with the sweet anticipation of sticking it to the US Dictator. Some highlights of the zingers:
“China’s delegate opposed “all acts of unilateralism and bullying” and condemned external interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs under any pretext. The United States must heed the call of the international community immediately, avoid further escalations and uphold the navigation safety of regional countries, he urged.”
“The representative of the Russian Federation said that by illegally destroying civilian vessels in the Caribbean Sea, the United States is exerting pressure on an independent State whose policy is “not to Washington’s liking”. Describing the United States’ illegal blockade of Venezuela’s coast as “the clearest and absolutely real act of aggression”, he warned of the catastrophic consequences of such “cowboy-like conduct” for the residents of Venezuela.”
“Dialogue is the only viable path towards lasting peace and preventing further instability and human suffering,” said Mohamed Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations.”
Oh to be sitting at Mar a Lago watching TOMs head spin. I can imagine the yelling at the TV, the gesticulating, the choice nicknames he’s creating off the cuff for each country’s representative. I cannot wait to see how Karoline Leavitt kicks this one back in her snide, dismissive, snotty little way.
As long as the pile on is going, here’s another one for the Xmas stocking. Canada aired the “60 Minutes” piece on TOMs deportation practices and outcomes. Because “60 Minutes” canned it at the last moment. “As controversy continues over a decision by the top editor of CBS News to spike a “60 Minutes” story critical of the Trump administration shortly before air time, the piece is now available on a Canadian streaming service. The story, “Inside CECOT,” focused on immigrants sent to the notorious Salvadoran prison by the Trump administration.
Journalists inside and outside CBS News criticized the decision by Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss, who took over the news organization in October after running a conservative website, The Free Press. Weiss says the story needed more reporting, including an on-camera response from the White House. But the story was held as the network’s parent company is pushing a hostile bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery — including CNN — and is reportedly seeking the backing of the Trump administration. The story at the center of the controversy includes interviews with several people deported from the U.S. and sent to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, known as CECOT, under President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. Those featured in the episode recount torture and physical and sexual abuse they suffered at the prison, according to NBC News.” I again say “good show” to the Canadians who seem to be ready for a one-up on TOM at every opportunity. We’ll see who’s the 51st state……or the 11th province.
