No sleepy Sunday for TOM. Though he’s done nothing earth-shattering, the head wizard is certainly scheming away for this week’s onslaught.
But he has made a mark for himself in other ways across the globe. “France's far-right National Rally (RN) leader Marine Le Pen has called a court ruling banning her from running for office for five years a "witch hunt"."I won't give up," she told thousands of flag-waving supporters in Place Vauban, close to the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Sunday. She was on Monday found guilty of helping to embezzle €2.9m (£2.5m) of EU funds between 2004 and 2016 for use by her party. Le Pen has appealed. At the rally on Sunday she claimed the ruling was a "political decision", adding: "We are not asking to be above the law, but to not be below the law." Hmmmm. Where might we have heard that one before?
And in the great state of Tejas, another child has died of measles. We’ve now gone backwards not only in politics and rights for citizens to the 1950’s,but also in health care and public health. “During the decade before measles vaccine became available, measles caused an estimated 400 –500 deaths, 48,000 were hospitalizations and 1,000 cases of encephalitis (swelling of the brain) per year in the United States.” In Texas, two children have died so far. The latest: “The school-aged child was not vaccinated, had no underlying health conditions and was in hospital suffering complications from measles, Aaron Davis, the vice president of UMC Health System, told the BBC.” Cases are just below 500 and have spread to neighboring states. Do you think those states could (should?) sue Texas for exposing them to something that will cost them hundreds of thousands in medical costs for sick children (mostly those on Medicaid who do not receive proper medical care/who are not vaccinated). Because of the vaccine, measles was declared eliminated in 2020. How quickly we fall.
Last tidbit for today, in the "it’s ok if you do it to others but not to me" category….”Leonardo Baez and Nora Avila-Guel’s bakery in the Texas community of Los Fresnos is a daily stop for many residents to share gossip over coffee and pick up cakes and pastries for birthdays, office parties or themselves. When Homeland Security Investigations agents showed up at Abby’s Bakery in February and arrested the owners and eight employees, residents of Los Fresnos were shocked. The reaction in the town of 8,500 residents may show the limits of support for President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in a majority Hispanic region dotted with fields of cotton, sugarcane and red grapefruit where Republicans made gains in last year’s elections.” So now people are outraged? Now? Because he is coming for everyone. I will keep saying it. No one is immune. There is always something about you that will b considered un-MAGA. It’s only a matter of time. It Can’t Happen Here, right?
