I would now like to apply to become an honorary Canadian citizen because Trudeau had a phenomenal response to TOM’s Terrible Tariffs today. If you want to cheer and clap and give a resounding huzzah, listen https://youtu.be/83f47jIS_D8?si=PZRtW71MewnmS133.
I’ll provide the highlights and high five-able moments here. It is TIME that someone beside the Gov of Maine stand up to this nonsense. Instead of WWIII, I hope that we are only in for the great tennis match of the century. TOM: high lob over to Canada instituting absurd tariffs.
"The United States launched a trade war against Canada, their closest ally, their closest friend, at the same time they are talking about working positively with Russia," Trudeau said. "Make that make sense." Annnnd Trudeau hits a nice cross-court shot to the far corner. Love 15.
Trudeau spoke first to the American people. "Your government has chosen to do this to you," Trudeau said in remarks directed at the American people. "A fight with Canada will have no winners." We hear you! We do. It is important to know the background and the slimy way in which TOM did this. “He (Trudeau) said the fentanyl excuse for the tariffs was something of a cover — a "legal justification" to tap emergency presidential trade powers so he can invoke tariffs that clearly violate the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) that Trump himself signed in his first term.”
“Referencing a recent Wall Street Journal editorial that called Trump's trade action against allies "dumb," Trudeau said he had a message for the president: "Donald, you are a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do." Ooooh. That was a sneaky one. Dropped right across the net. Now TOM will have a blustery serve, looking for an ace himself.
And in response, this was the best that TOM could muster. Really? “Governor Trudeau? "Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the U.S., our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!" he said in a social media post.” And Trudeau looks to be on way to winning the first set. As he indicated, we (Canadians and Americans) will all be the ones to suffer. We are the ball being bandied back and forth across the international net.
I think I can hear President Sheinbaum on the sidelines: “I got next!”
